Trail of Khmer Architecture in north-eastern Thailand - Buriram & Korat (12 to 14 September 2008)
We walked down from the top after 6 p.m. Then we had a long drive to Phimai district town of Nakorn Ratchasima. To cut short the distance we took the road no. 2166 which links between Nong Ki and Lam Plai Mat district and then changed to the road no. 2163 to Phimai which is approximately 100 kilometers. The idea was good from the map, but in practice it was not quite so. Unlike other roads around tourist and commercial spots this road no. 2166 is, for our old car, not in good condition. The paved road surface is bumpy and there are many port holes. Our remaining gas was just enough for 150 kilometers. And the rain started.
Finally we reached the road no. 24 and stopped at a gas station. After filling up the fuel oil we continued driving and switched to the road no.2163. This road is good paved and smooth. We arrived Phimai town after 9 p.m and checked in Boonsiri Guesthouse 50 meters from the Phimai Historical Site.

We spent our morning at Prasart Hin Phimai. There were many tourist groups. We heard southern and northern accents. They were busy posting for picture and strolling from one spot to another in groups.
Prasart Hin Phimai is one of the biggest and most important Mahayana Buddhist sanctuary in Thailand and one of the finest examples of classical Khmer architecture. It was built around the 11th - 12th century A.D. Phimai is probably the same word as "Vimaya". The latter appears in the inscription on the door frame of Southern entrance of the inner wall. It was once linked by a direct road with Angkor Wat in today Cambodia. The temple was restored by Bernard Groslier, a French archaeologist, who also worked at Angkor Wat.
