Boats landing at Pakbeng, Mekong river, northern Laos
Everyday boats from Luang Prabang and Houixai, carrying local and
foreign travellers as well as cargo loads of various produces, come and stop
for a night at Pakbeng. Next day morning the boat crew would wake up to make
breakfast for themselves, boil water to fill the thermos (flasks) for coffee
during the cruise, and start engines to get ready for another half
of the journey.
A discarded log waiting to become firewood at a village
After all good parts of the felled (Padauk) log were taken, the least valuable part
was left at the water edge on the Mekong river. It would later be cut
to make fire wood, crude furniture such as roadside bench.
